It's a powerful way to create and save detailed GPS-accurate maps for use on the desktop software and on the GPS. - Prepare exactly the maps and imagery you want on the desktop, including waypoints, tracks, and automatically generated routes, and then transfer to the Earthmate GPS PN-20
- Once you’ve been in the field or in-vehicle with the Earthmate GPS, transfer your new and updated waypoints and track logs back to the Topo USA desktop software and edit and save within your map files
Topo USA/Earthmate PN-20 Map Exchange Overview
DeLorme has pre-cut U.S. multi-state regions within the included Topo USA software. This allows you to update the world base map on the GPS with more detailed routable U.S. highway and major roads for your region(s) of interest. This design maximizes user-available, on-device internal memory for even more detailed topographic maps and imagery you cut from Topo USA of your precise areas of interest. The Eastern 1(A) multi-state region, as an example, requires 12 MB, with a total of 75 MB available on the device. These precut regions are located in the left window of the Handheld Exchange dialog, which is also where your map packages, waypoints, and tracks will be stored once created. (Note: you can store up to 2 GB of data on an SD card. The SD card slot is located within the battery compartment, beneath the batteries.)

If you are looking to buy your first handheld GPS and want a solid performer that's loaded with features, this is a terrific buy. With the 2008 release of DeLorme's PN-40, the upgraded version of this unit, the PN-20 is a veritable steal. You won't find another feature-rich color handheld GPSr at this price.

As I have been contemplating purchasing another device bad thoughts of my PN-20 fill my mind.
It has failed EVERY time I needed it.
Sometimes it couldn't pickup satellites.
Other times the battery died with no warning (unpleasant when it is not noticed for an hour when I needed a bearing)
After 3 or 4 new rechargeable batteries from the company (none of which lasted more than a few hours) I gave up and started using alkalines. These lasted longer.

Santa brought me an Earthmate PN-20 for Christmas. I've only been playing with it for one day. I'll come back after I have been using it for a while and update my review, but here are my first impressions.

The Earthmate PN-20 has exceeded my hopes and expectations. We bought it for use while hiking and are not dissapointed at all! It can do so much that it will probably take us quite awhile to learn it all. The maps are much better than Garmins and the low price of downloading more is a even more of an advantage. While it is too slow for my taste in redrawing the maps for use in a vehicle, for hiking and biking it is more than what we need. Besides, with a screen as small as handhelds have, I wouldn't ... My Earthmate GPS works great. The only thing I would change is the USB plug on the devise. It sometimes fails to make good contact and needs to be cleaned befor connection. I also would like to have control over the device odometer so I can match it up with the actual miles I have on my bike.
