Editorial Review:

Album Description:
Though often misrepresented and romanticized, the Roma people have had a fascinating history. Leaving the Indus Valley more than 1,000 years ago, they migrated first to the Middle East and Eastern Europe and then to the rest of the world, making an impact on the cultures with which they came into contact. They earned reputations as master musicians and entertainers whose influences can be heard in a variety of genres, including flamenco, Jewish klezmer and the works of Dvorák, Rachmaninov and other classical composers. Now, modern day music makers from a variety of backgrounds are mining this rich legacy to create a movement that's gained dance floor disciples around the world.

A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from Gypsy Groove will be donated to the Roma Education Fund in support of its policies and programs that promote quality education for Gypsy children.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent!
Buy it. It's different the first time that you listento it, but after 2 or 3 times is when all the details are appreciated and is possible to enjoy the intensity of the music....

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - European Pop and not Romani Groove
This "so called" Gypsy music is a modern interpretation/improvisation of the most famous Gypsy's songs/music. I love traditional, old- fashion Gypsy music in true Romani language, but the languages that are features in this CD are Czech, French, Russian, Arabic, etc.. and only some are in Romani. That's not what I expected and this CD is not for me. I would rather listen to Shakira or European pop instead, but not this "so called" Gypsy Groove.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Super!
For an old guy like me this stuff helps get the blood pumping. A very well put together album with all good listenable tunes, no duds.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Gypsy Snooze
This CD has a lot of very positive, intelligently written reviews, and it's kind of hard for me to imagine that they're about the CD I bought, which is the oddest and least interesting take on Roma music I've ever heard. Roma musicians have always tended to take on some aspects of local music, and it's possible that's the case here (a couple of the cuts have some distant - very distant - similarity to klezmer music). Yet what the whole CD lacks is the vibrant energy and drive that characterizes all ... Read More
