Editorial Review:
Description: A critical masterpiece, GANDHI is an intriguing story about activism, politics, religious tolerance and freedom. But at the center of it all is an extraor- dinary man who fought for a nonviolent, peaceful existence, and set an entire nation free. Winner of 8 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Director (Lord Richard Attenborough) and Best Actor (Sir Ben Kingsley), GANDHI’s highly acclaimed cast also includes Candice Bergen, Edward Fox, Sir John Gielgud, Roshan Seth and Martin Sheen.
The extras include more than 90 minutes of new material, including interviews with director Lord Richard Attenborough; actors Geraldine James, Saeed Jaffrey, and Edward Fox; Diana Hawkins (Director of Publicity), Terry Clegg (Executive in charge of production), Billy Williams (Cinematographer) and Stuart Craig (Production Designer). The DVD includes a Director’s commentary with Attenborough, who also filmed a personal introduction to the film. The featurettes include In Search of Gandhi, Reflections on Ben, Madeleine Slade: An Englishwoman Abroad, The Funeral, Shooting an Epic In India, Looking Back, Designing Gandhi (3 mini featurettes) and From the Director’s Chair (2 mini featurettes).
Amazon.com: Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. --Tom Keogh

Rating: - Gandhi
It must have been a very daunting task to create a biopic about Gandhi. He is still a sacrosanct figure through much of the world, an incredible amount of history happened throughout his lifetime, but also because, as a protagonist, Gandhi went from a regular lawyer to a major figurehead of peace and Indian independence- quite an arc to effectively show to an audience. However, this film does an incredible job in humanizing the man, and distilling his accomplishments to a three-hour cinematic experience. ... Read More
Rating: - One Of The Greates Films Ever Made
Gandhi is an excellent film that any person will enjoy. I could write about it for pages, but for convenience, I shall keep this review short. This film will really make you think about life and war. You will not ever regret purchasing this great film. Very powerful, moving, and inspirational to any person with a soul. I highly recommend this wonderful film to everybody.

Rating: - Good Acting
Gandhi was lots of fun..I love the parts where there is beatings and he
just turns the other cheek...I wish there could have been more car chases
but I think it may have taken away from the story...Gandhi was a cool dude
he was smarter than most the people he hung out with...What makes him better than Batman and other superheroes is that he was a real dude not just a guy from a cartoon story...I never figured out who his girlfriend was....maybe I missed that part...Gandhi was old school ... Read More
Rating: - Monumental Film Making Worthy of It's Subject
Watching Richard Attenborough's masterpiece bio-epic is both an uplifting and draining experience. The performance of Ben Kingsley as Gandhi is one of those rare moments in film history where an actor seems to inhabit the character so completely allowing the viewer to get a deeper personal experience of an historical character.
Perfectly blending the political history with the personal story , this movie at 3 hours is an investment of time that pays dividends rarely found on a screen. I recently watched ... Read More
Rating: - Ben Kingsley at His Best as Gandhi
This is a movie everyone who can should see. It is deeply moving through most of it. Some viewers will see humor in it as well. The superlatives are too numerous to list in a short review. Some viewers will be disappointed in spots. To be more realistic, the film would need to exlore Gandhi's mere mortal side (as starters, his wife suggests he cheated on his celebacy oath a few times). It also would need to exlore his showman side (as starters, he wore his loincloth when visiting England in very cold weather).
